Why Candles Tunnel (and How to Prevent It)

There's nothing more disappointing than lighting a beautiful candle only to find a deep hole forming down the center while wax clings to the sides. This is called candle tunneling, and the good news is that it's usually preventable.
At Broken Esscents, we believe every candle deserves to burn beautifully from the first light to the last.
What Is Candle Tunneling?

Candle tunneling happens when the flame melts only the center of the candle instead of reaching the edges. Over time, the un-melted wax around the sides creates a "tunnel," making it harder for the candle to burn properly and wasting fragrance and wax.
Why Does It Happen?
The most common reasons are:
-The first burn was too short. The first burn is the most important. Wax has a memory, and future burns often follow the pattern set during the first one.
-The wick wasn't trimmed properly. A wick that's too long or too short can affect how evenly the candle burns.
-Burning in a drafty area. Fans, open windows, or air vents can cause the flame to burn unevenly.
-Burn times that are too short. Blowing out your candle before a full melt pool forms increases the chance of tunneling.
How to Prevent Candle Tunneling
Let the Wax Reach the Edges
During the first burn, allow the melted wax to reach the entire edge of the container before extinguishing the flame. This usually takes 2-4 hours, depending on the size of the candle.
Trim Your Wick

Before each burn, trim the wick to about 1/4 inch. This helps create a steady flame and cleaner burn.
Burn on a Flat Surface

Always place your candle on a stable, level surface away from drafts.
Don't Burn Too Long
While short burns can cause tunneling, burning for more than 4 hours at a time isn't recommended either. Extinguish the flame, let the candle cool, trim your wick, and relight when you're ready.
Already Have a Tunnel? Here's How to Fix It
Don't throw it away just yet.
The Foil Method

Wrap a piece of aluminum foil around the top of the candle, leaving a small opening above the flame. Let it burn for about an hour. The trapped heat helps melt the wax around the edges so the surface becomes even again.
Warm the Wax
If the tunnel is small, using a candle warmer can sometimes help level the wax before your next burn.
A Little Care Goes a Long Way
A candle isn't just something you light-it's an experience. Taking a few extra minutes to care for it means you'll enjoy a stronger scent throw, a longer burn time, and every ounce of wax you paid for.
